Dordrechts Museum, founded in 1842, is one of the oldest museums in the Netherlands. In over 175 years, a rich collection has been built up that includes six centuries of Dutch painting.Since then, the internationally renowned and appreciated collection of painting has become one of the most important in the urban museums of the Netherlands. The Dordrechts Museum has a unique collection of paintings and drawings by Ary Scheffer, born in Dordrecht. He made a career in Paris and is one of the great romantic painters of the 19th century. The later 19th century is strongly represented with famous painters from the Haagse School -Mesdag, Weissenbruch and the brothers Maris – and Amsterdam impressionists such as Breitner and Isaac Israels.
